Q
What travel documents do i need?
A

All U.S. citizens traveling to the Cayman Islands must carry a valid passport. Canadian and U.K. citizens are not required to carry a passport but need to provide proof of citizenship, such as an original birth certificate with a raised seal or a notarized copy of a birth certificate, in addition to a valid government-issued photo ID. Citizens of all other nations need a passport for entry into the Cayman Islands. Travelers carrying passports must ensure their passport is valid for up to 6 months after the scheduled date of return to the home country.

Remember, if you are not a U.S. citizen and you are stopping in or traveling through the U.S., or a U.S. territory (including Puerto Rico and th U.S. Virgin Islands) before arriving in the Cayman Islands, you will need a passport and possibly a U.S. visa. For the most up-to-date information on obtaining transit visas for the U.S., consult www.travel.state.gov or call the National Passport Information Center toll free at 1-877-4USA-PPT or TDD/TYY: 1.888.874.7793.

Foreign nationals should contact their respective governments to obtain passports. For more information on Cayman Island immigration requirements, click here.

Finally, on your arrival, use your smart phone to take a photograph of your passport, just in case!

Q
What is the time zone?
A

Cayman time zone is UTC/BMT-5hours, or US East Coast time. The Cayman Islands do not keep daylight saving time.

Q
Do i need special plugs or converter to use the electrical outlets?
A

Electric voltage is 120-240AC, 60 cycles. North American appliances DO NOT require an adapter or transformer.

Q
What is the local currency?
A

Although the US dollar is readily accepted throughout the Cayman Islands, prices are typically listed in the country’s official currency, known as the CI dollar. According to the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, the CI dollar maintains a fixed rate of exchange with the US dollar: $1 CI is equal to $1.25 US; or $1 US is equal to $.80 CI.

Q
Are credit cards accepted?
A

Most businesses accept major credit cards. ATMS that accept Visa and MasterCard are available at some banks and at Owen Roberts International Airport.

Q
What is the Language Spoken Locally?
A

English is the official language of the Cayman Islands.

Q
How Do I Get To Cayman Islands by Air?
A

The main gateway to the Cayman Islands is through Grand Cayman. Flights to Grand Cayman arrive at Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) (tel. 345/949-5252). The Cayman Islands are easily accessible from the U.S. Flying time from Miami is 1 hour 20 minutes; from Houston, 2 hours 45 minutes; from Tampa, 1 hour 40 minutes; and from Atlanta, 1 hour 30 minutes. Boston and New York are hubs for flights from the U.S. Northeast. Only a handful of nonstop flights are available from the U.S. Midwest, so most visitors use Miami as their gateway. Residents flying from the West Coast to the Caymans usually have a connecting flight from New York or Miami.

Q
Should I Rent a Car?
A

Little Cayman is a very small island–only 10 miles long and 1 mile wide. There is a taxi company that you can use if you need it, but it really isn’t necessary unless you really need to get somewhere fast and don’t have any other means of transportation. Bicycles are a common form of transportation, which are available from the Club on a complimentary basis, as is van transportation upon request.

If you want a bit more speed and local color, try renting a scooter. Open November thru Jun, contact Scooten Scooters!, which rents a fleet of Yahama scooters on a ½ day, full day or weekly basis. Click here for more information. You’ll have to buy a Visitor’s Driving Permit for US$15, good for the duration of your visit, charged in addition to the base rental fee.

Q
What are the seasonal differences?
A

The dry season is usually between January and June, with the wettest months falling between August and October. The peak of hurricane season is late August to early September.

What is the Current weather

Q
What should i pack?
A

On Little Cayman, you will be spending a lot of time outdoors, and everything is island casual. This means you will want to pack comfortable, light weight clothing that is suitable for the tropic temperatures. Light-colored, light-weight cottons and linen t-shirts and tank tops are the best choice, with shorts and khaki pants. Sandals, flip-flops are standard, with occasional top-siders or sneakers. Evenings can bring a light chill, so a sweater, sweatshirt or wind breaker is good to have. When the wardrobe runs out, the hotel laundry will get you back in style.

For watersports, pack one or two swimsuits, preferably made of quick drying material. Safe money and consider throwing in your favorite mask and snorkel for convenience and comfort. For diving, just a skin or 1 mil wetsuit should cover all water conditions. If you tend to get seasick, pack some Dramamine. A ziplock plastic bag – or two – come in handy for coming home with wet bathing suits.

Always carry a small dry bag or some zip lock bags to protect papers and electronic gear. Bring some insect repellent, and of course, don’t forget the camera equipment with a couple memory cards in case one gets corrupted along the way!!

Q
Should I buy travel insurance?
A

It’s not a bad idea. A good policy will include trip cancellation and interruption coverage, medical coverage – including coverage for emergency evacuation – as well as baggage loss protection. We recommend Travel Guard Sportsman’s Travel Insurance, America’s leading provider of travel insurance and assistance programs. For information on their travel policies, click here, or check such aggregator sites as Insuremytrip.com or Squaremouth.com.
