Capt Billy Black has been a professional fisherman for over 40 years. For most of these years, his “Duchess” was the premier sportfishing boat operating out of Walkers Cay, the legendary northern Bahamas fishing destination. During his long tenure in the Bahamas, Capt Billy Black has had at one time or another many of the Bahamian record catches for Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Bluefin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Dolphin, Wahoo, and Sailfish. Many of his monster blue marlins have been raised on trolling lures he has customized over a lifetime of big-game tournament fishing, and now retails to the public.
By anyone’s definition the “Duchess”, a Hatteras 50, is the ultimate sport fishing machine! She’s equipped with all the gear – and then some – necessary to chase down the biggest marlin, to boat that monster wahoo, or drag up your denizen of the deep. To make her run faster, and offer guests the latest in convenience, she has undergone a complete refit under Billy’s keen eye for perfection with new engines and a new salon. Questions for Pro Billy Black
Q: What is your favorite fish to catch and why?
A: Blue marlin because they jump all over the ocean and they are so much fun to catch.
Q: What is your favorite local place to eat?
A: Flanigan’s in Stuart. They have a lot of good stuft like swordfish, fresh tuna and dolphin.
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world to fish (and money were no object), where would you go and what would you fish for?
A: Cairns, Australia for black marlin. They catch a lot of really big ones there.
Q: When you aren’t fishing, what is your favorite activity?
A: I would say hunting deer, turkey, alligator and wild hog. I don’t kill anything I don’t eat.
Q: If you only had one lure and you had to catch a fish, what would it be and why?
A: It would be my Billy Black Series ‘Big Mama’ called the Bleeding Dolphin’. I’ve caught a lot of big blue marlin on it.
Q: Who would you most like to take out on a fishing charter?
A: President Trump. That would be a hoot.
